When selling or buying natural gas, it is often the amount of energy that is crucial for both selling, and purchase value. The exact heating value has to be established, and in many cases a calibration gas standard is needed for comparison. To find a common ground for these measurements there are international standards such as and ISO 6976 for calculation of calorific values.
Additionally, equipment such as heaters which use natural gas are required to be tested for performance and overall heat generation. These test gases must comply with international and national standards such as EN 437.
