International, national and regional law regulates pollution control guidelines imposed on waste incinerators, power plants, industrial manufacturers and others. The need for environmental testing of the water, soil and air is therefor an important issue in today’s production processes. Precision testing must accurately measure levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s), PCBs, emissions and other pollutants within the plant, and in the ambient air and surroundings. A wide variety of plants including electric power stations, refineries, chemical plants, pulp and paper mills are required to operate Continuous Emission Monitoring (CEM) systems to quantify the amount of critical pollutants such as SO2, NOX, CO2 etc. in the facility's exhaust stream. CEM units must be calibrated on a regular basis using gas calibration standards produced under a stringent manufacturing protocol often mandated by either national law and regulations e.g., EPA and NIST or international standards such as EN 14000.
