GRAS is an acronym for the phrase Generally Recognized As Safe. A GRAS food substance is not subject to premarket review and approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because it is generally recognized, by qualified experts, to be safe under the intended conditions of use. Equipment such as cylinder regulators used with FDA's GRAS approved food additive gases should also be chosen to be GRAS compatible. In Europe, the European Commission regulates the materials used in contact with food through the EC regulation No. 1935/2004.
